Duchess Fergie Moving On After Scandal

Duchess Fergie had quite the scandal on her hands when the story broke that she was selling access to her ex-husband Prince Andrew for approximately $700,000.   But Prince Andrew is reportedly not dwelling on the issue, even when Fergie offered to move out of the Windsor home she’s shared with her ex-husband for the past two years.  A friend recently told reporters that  when Fergie called Prince William to tearfully apologize, “He told her she had been set up and although she had clearly made a massive mistake, he wasn’t going to kick her out onto the streets.  He knows she can’t afford anywhere–that’s why he let her stay at Royal Lodge in the first place.”

The couple wed in 1986 in an all-out celebration, complete with Nancy Reagan and Margaret Thatcher as guests, the 900 year-old Westminster cathedral, and over 30,000 flowers.  Fergie’s engagement ring was particularly spectacular.  Covered in diamonds, it featured a Burmese ruby to match Ferguson’s red tresses.

Despite the scandal, life goes on for the Duchess.  Though her friends describe her as “remorseful and regretful” and “very, very fragile”, she continues to blaze a path with her charity work.  Fergie emceed a breakfast at the New York Javits Convention Center, talking about the inspiration she finds in her work for her own charity, Children in Crisis.

Valerie Bertinelli: Getting Engaged When You’re 50

TV star Valerie Bertinelli recently got engaged while vacationing with her boyfriend, businessman Tom Vitale, in Italy.  Vitale, 48, proposed to Bertinelli, 50, during a romantic night spent in Florence.   The actress confided, “We’d talked about getting married, but I was still shocked.  It was sweet when he asked me because he was so scared.  I was like ‘Are you kidding me?’”

Both experienced the dissolution of their marriages in 2004, and began dating.   Meanwhile, Vitale felt that the time was right to propose when the couple were in Italy.  “If the time wasn’t right, I wouldn’t have asked.  We’re both still a little afraid of commitment, but then we were over there, and it was like our souls calibrated.”

Bertinelli says there’s already a wedding set for this Fall and that she’s leaving all the wedding plans up to Vitale.  “He already knows the different kinds of bells he wants to go off during the ceremony.”

As for any engagement ring details, Bertinelli is keeping her lips sealed.  But she is sure to praise her fiancée for appreciating her as she is.  “I never felt more beautiful at any weight than when Tom looks at me.  He loved me no matter what.  In his way, he’s teaching me to love myself just as I am.”

No Wedding Gifts for Brand and Perry

Katy Perry and Russell Brand are not big on tradition.  The couple got engaged in India atop an elephant, and have caused quite few headlines with some of their projected wedding plans.  One of the more outlandish ideas was the couple’s plans for making their dogs the possible ring bearer.  But the most transgressive of all their ideas may be their no-gifts policy.  And yet, Brand explains, “Given that Katy and I both have good jobs, we don’t want any presents.  It would be a massive indulgence.”

Brand’s “Get Him to the Greek co-stars have a few recommendations for him, however.  Nicholas Stoller says that Perry and Brand might need “a waffle maker” and a “really fancy hair dryer”, while Brands other co-star, Kali Hawk, says they might need some “diamond, platinum, titanium-encrusted flat irons.”  Meanwhile, newlywed Elizabeth Moss adds that “you got to invest in the good sheets and towels…Those are things you don’t buy yourself.”  Essentials!

Perry and Brand originally met at the MTV VMA Awards, while Brand was hosting. Apparently Brand shamelessly flirted with Perry and the pair obviously really hit it off.  Since then, the pair have been inseparable, traveling everywhere from Thailand to London to India to Los Angeles.  No wedding date announced yet, but all can expect it to be a perfectly unconventional bash.

‘Lost’ Actor and Barbara Hershey Split

Despite their 21 year age-difference, ‘Lost’ star Naveen Andrews and screen actress Barbara Hershey have officially called it quits.  The pair have been together for over twelve years, first meeting on the set of the obscure 1999 film, Drowning on Dry Land, when Hershey was 50 and Naveen was only 29.  Though the pair remained together for over a decade, they never had plans to marry or exchange engagement rings.

Hershey is best known for her roles in “Beaches”  and “Hannah and Her Sisters”, and of course Andrews was tailor-made for his role in “Lost”.  The two have managed to keep the details of their relationship (and break-up) private, with one of  the few loose details being a brief break-up in 2005 when Andrews apparently hooked up with another woman and fathered a child. Hershey and Andrews got back together soon after that, and managed to keep their break-up quiet when it happened six months ago.

Alrosa to Increase Diamond Production

Russian jewelry giant Alrosa has just announced its plans to increase jewelry production over the 2010-2012 period to produce 102.3 million carats in rough diamonds. Known as Russia’s largest diamond company, and practically a monopoly, Alrosa is heavily engaged in all aspects of the diamond process, including exploration, mining, manufacture and sale. The Alrosa behemoth actually accounts for nearly 25% of the world’s rough diamonds supply and nearly 97% of the Russian supply, according to the New York Times.
Alrosa mines Alrosa’s plan for the next three years will be presented for approval at the annual conference set to take place in June. The company plans to produce 34 million carats at $3.18 billion average production. Of course, sales dropped in 2009 to 32.8 million carats during the global financial crisis, with sales dropping further to $2.19 billion. The year before wasn’t quite so bad with sales totaling $2.93 billion.

Breathless Robber Caught in Jewelry Heist

A man tried to rob a jewelry store in suburban Seattle, but didn’t get too far…literally.  The man was said to have entered the store saying he was shopping for engagement rings.  He subsequently barraged the clerk with endless questions, and asked for her to remove everything out of the display case.  When the clerk refused, he flashed a gun tucked in his pants.  The robber quickly told the clerk to give him a dozen rings and then fled the store.

Apparently a number of good samaritans chased the man down the road, making headway.  The exhausted robber first threw out the gun, which turned out to be a fake, and then threw the stolen engagement rings behind him.  If he had been more agile, he would have gotten away with over $75,000 in stolen designer pieces!  The robber who was handcuffed and out of breath told police he only had one lung when they arrested him.

Black Diamond in ‘Sex and the City 2′

The new Sex and the City sequel certainly features a bevy of daring fashion and jewelry couture. But perhaps the piece that has most fans buzzing is the black diamond ring that longtime romantic interest Big presents her with in the film’s final scene, adding “Because you are not like anyone else.”

Sex and the City

Sought-after designer Itay Malkin created the ring and was selected from a pool of over twenty designers. Two of his rings were actually selected anonymously by writer/director Michael Patrick King and star Sarah Jessica Parker. Malkin later collaborated with Parker and acclaimed designer Patricia Field to design the final ring for the film: a 5-carat black diamond ring set in 18-karat white gold, surrounded by 80 natural colorless diamonds in pave settings.

Of course, this extravagant piece wasn’t the only item featured in the Sex and the City sequel.  The chick flick extravaganza also featured scads of diamond drop earrings, classic gold jewelry, huge pendants, and fashion-forward necklaces, which included House of Field, Chanel, Dior and Van Cleef designs.

Mannequins Wearing Gold at Pat Field Show

The acclaimed “Sex and the City” designer Pat Field unveiled some new looks this weekend at a hot-ticker “Swimsational Disco Soiree”. This was a big week for Field as the latest installment in the “Sex and the City” franchise, “Sex and the City 2″ hit theaters. Field’s costumes for the flick received mixed reactions, with some critics calling the outfits “over-the-top” and “tacky”.

The “Swimsational Disco Soiree” show featured several real-looking mannequins clad in sultry swimwear, hot accessories and amazing jewelry.  The event was co-sponsored by the World Gold Council, which offered the much sought-after Ippolita gold jewelry.  Meanwhile, House of Field swimwear, eyewear and beach towels launched.  The House of Field designer David Dalrymple commented, “We had this opportunity to develop a swimwear collection, and it just seemed fitting with the movie because we had been doing a lot of swim looks in the film last fall, and it just seemed to be organic.”

Sean Penn: Single Activist

Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn is finding more time and energy to devote to activist causes now that he’s single.  Penn had been together with actress Robin Wright since 1989, just after a stormy divorce with superstar Madonna.   The pair got married in 1996 after already having two children.   After initially receiving a gorgeous engagement ring, the two exchanged wedding rings in a private ceremony in Los Angeles.  “I just felt like I needed to dive in.” Wright had said about the couple’s roller-coaster relationship.

The pair briefly reunited to pray for their sixteen year-old son’s recovery after a near-fatal skateboarding incident.  After that experience, Penn did some soul-searching and consulted composer-producer T Bone Burnett, the man responsible for Bob Dylan’s born-again revival in the seventies.

“I wanted to give back something to more to help struggling people, but I didn’t know how to best do it.   I was for twenty years in a relationship with Robin and eighteen years with children.  I didn’t have time to commit to anything–for real–in places like Iraq, except to denounce the war.  But now I’m single, I can lend a hand.”    Penn has focused nearly all his efforts these days towards helping the victims of the devastating 7.0 earthquake in Haiti.  Penn affirms that his commitment to the Caribbean is a longterm one, saying that “there is no exit for me until there is more life than death.”
