Al and Tipper Gore Separate

After forty years of marriage, Al and Tipper Gore have chosen to separate and will likely end their marriage.  The AP obtained a copy of an email sent out by the Gores, which read “it was a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration.”  The Gores’ rep confirmed the statement, but declined to give further details.

Though their marriage had always been strong, it was also often tested by Al’s governmental roles and also the death of their six year-old son.  The pair had met and fell in love the night of his high school graduation dance.  Tipper later wrote in a memoir that “it was like everyone else melted away.”  Al later proposed marriage to tipper along the banks of the Charles River during her junior year at Boston University.

The pair married and exchanged wedding rings in 1970 at the Washington National Cathedral.   Over the years the pair have often commented on their marriage, encouraging married couples to stay together.  “One of the lessons I’ve learned from [Tipper] is a way to enrich my own experience of life by opening up to the heart as well as the head…she’s been a great teacher for me.”  Al Gore once said.

Sean Penn: Single Activist

Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn is finding more time and energy to devote to activist causes now that he’s single.  Penn had been together with actress Robin Wright since 1989, just after a stormy divorce with superstar Madonna.   The pair got married in 1996 after already having two children.   After initially receiving a gorgeous engagement ring, the two exchanged wedding rings in a private ceremony in Los Angeles.  “I just felt like I needed to dive in.” Wright had said about the couple’s roller-coaster relationship.

The pair briefly reunited to pray for their sixteen year-old son’s recovery after a near-fatal skateboarding incident.  After that experience, Penn did some soul-searching and consulted composer-producer T Bone Burnett, the man responsible for Bob Dylan’s born-again revival in the seventies.

“I wanted to give back something to more to help struggling people, but I didn’t know how to best do it.   I was for twenty years in a relationship with Robin and eighteen years with children.  I didn’t have time to commit to anything–for real–in places like Iraq, except to denounce the war.  But now I’m single, I can lend a hand.”    Penn has focused nearly all his efforts these days towards helping the victims of the devastating 7.0 earthquake in Haiti.  Penn affirms that his commitment to the Caribbean is a longterm one, saying that “there is no exit for me until there is more life than death.”

Lee Ann Rimes Takes Responsibility for Divorce

Country crooner Lee Ann Rimes told reporters in an interview earlier this week that she believes everything happens for a reason. In the revealing interview, Rimes accepted full responsibility for her actions which led to the dissolution of her seven-year marriage.
Lee Ann Rimes

Rimes had a fairly traditional wedding, which included a string quarter playing “Air” from Handel’s Messiah. It was an intimate family affair, with only about 150 guests. There was a father-daughter dance and a beautiful extravagant engagement ring.

After the marriage eventually broke up because of Lee Ann’s affair with married actor Eddie Cibrian, Rimes said “I did one of the most selfish things that I possibly could do, in hurting someone else. I take responsibility for everything I’ve done. I hate that people got hurt. But I don’t regret the outcome.”

Now it appears that Rimes and Cibrian are in a committed relationship. The pair met each other on the set of the TV movie Northern Lights in 2008. Of the relationship, Rimes says “it was very emotionally driven. I never once thought that what I was doing was okay.” Rimes added that the entire experience taught her that marriage just wasn’t something that fulfilled her. Maybe we’ll hear more about that on her new album, Lady and Gentleman, that comes out in June.

Larry King is Staying Married

Veteran talk show host Larry King is apparently staying married. After both he and wife Shawn Southwick filed divorce papers just weeks ago, the pair decided to give their unusual relationship a second shot. As you may recall, Southwick grew upset after rumors that King was having an alleged affair with her sister. Meanwhile, it was revealed that Southwick was having an alleged affair with the kids’ baseball coach.

The couple just recently released this statement: “We love our children, we love our family, we love being a family. That is all that matters to us. We owe it to ourselves and our children to continue being dedicated to each other. We want to thank our friends for their loyal love and support–for being there for us.”

Both were photographed still wearing their wedding rings in public. King apparently let the baseball coach, Hector, who admitted to an affair with Southwick, in his good graces because he wanted his kids to be baseball players. The two children, Chance and Cannon, are 9 and 11.

Matt Lauer and Wife Deny Divorce Rumors

Today Show host Matt Lauer and his wife, Annette, are firmly denying recent divorce allegations.   Recent reports said that the Today show host  moved out of his family’s apartment, which Lauer firmly stated was “a work of fiction”.

“I am living in my apartment with Annette and my children as a family and a couple.  I have never moved out.  I am not moving out.  There’s no truth to that.”   Even still, the couple has been faced with marriage difficulties in the past, including a brief divorce filing in 2006.  Married for twelve years, Lauer’s wife is a former model.  She was photographed wearing her wedding ring this week, which may indicate the couple is determined to present a united front.

“Have we had a completely perfect, easy marriage?  No.  But the stories you’ve read over the years are not true.  I don’t think we’re any different than any married couple that’s been together for 12 years.”  Lauer also added that he’d have no time for infidelity during the Vancouver Olympics, with a schedule that had him waking at 1:30 am for 4 am broadcast.

Wedding Rings of Hollywood’s Golden Gals

With all the excitement over Betty White’s magnificent hosting of SNL, a number of grassroots campaigns have gone underway to thrust other older “golden years” comediennes into the SNL spotlight. As you know, White snagged her SNL hosting gig via a grassroots Facebook campaign that started after her appearance in a successful Snickers ad during the Superbowl. Other contestants with online buzz for the SNL hosting gig include the legendary Carol Burnett, Joan Rivers, Dolly Parton, and Cloris Leachman. So how do these comedy legends compare with today’s celebutantes and young comedians in the romance department? Check out the current and previous marriages of these TV legends.

betty white Betty White. Betty was married to Allen Ludden until he died of cancer in 1981, just a few years before her success with Golden Girls. After two failed marriages, Betty said “no” to Ludden several times before accepting his engagement ring. White finally agreed to marry him when he sent her a cute stuffed bunny. White says, “I wear his ring for good luck whenever I’m doing a big event.”
carol burnett Carol Burnett. Burnett had a seven year marriage that ended in divorce in 1962. She subsequently married TV producer Joe Hamilton in 1963 and the couple had three daughters. Burnett’s third marriage was to Brian Miller, drummer for the Hollywood Orchestra, and 23 years her younger.
joan rivers Joan Rivers. This comedy legend had a shortlived marriage in the 1950s before having her second marriage with Edgar Rosenberg in 1965. Rosenberg gave Rivers a generous diamond engagement ring, and Rivers has since joked in her comedy act that women getting married for the second time should always demand a bigger diamond.
chloris leachman Cloris Leachman. Award winner and Dancing With the Stars star Leachman married George Englund in New York City in 1953, with the pair getting a divorce in 1979. Even though the pair divorced, they remained committed to each other, having had five kids together. George ultimately said, “To me, we had five kids. That’s a huge piece of the continent of your life. The divorce was the end of the social aspect of it, but not the feeling and regard and care I have for her.”
Dolly Parton Dolly Parton. Each year, Parton and her husband Carl Dean celebrated their anniversary by returning to the Georgia chapel where they first exchanged vows in 1966. Now married over forty years, the pair cherish the visit. “We visit a park and get our picture taken on the steps outside the little Baptist church where we said our “I Do’s”.”

Tiger and Elin Headed for Divorce?

Things aren’t going so well for Tiger Woods.  With a failed comeback to golf, a ridiculous Nike commercial, and now his coach of six years quitting via text, Woods isn’t quite having the comeback he hoped for.  And rumor is that things may just continue on the downward slope as Elin Nordegren is reportedly planning to divorce Woods.  Apparently no amount of private yachts, island getaways or diamonds can convince her to stay!

Tiger Woods

A source reportedly said that despite couples therapy, things just aren’t boding well for the couple.  “They don’t fight.  There is a coldness between them and it’s Elin who is pulling the plug on the marriage.  She has tried to put things back together.  She went to therapy with Tiger.  She gave it a shot moving forward.”  The source went on to say that Elin is willing to share custody of the children with Tiger.

Other sources have told celebrity gossip sites like TMZ that the most important thing for both Elin and Tiger is keeping the terms of the divorce confidential.   Nordegren also went to Sweden with her children and some speculate that divorce proceedings may be filed there.

No Divorce For Larry King?

Larry  King might not be getting divorced, sources say, after he was spotted arm-in-arm on Sunday with his wife, Shawn Southwick, at their son’s baseball game.  The couple have been married for nearly thirteen years, and things allegedly got very nasty when wife Shawn found out that King had been having an affair with her younger sister for several years. Shawn claimed that Larry bought her younger sister lavish gifts, including a car for over $160,000.   Even worse: there was no pre-nup! So Shawn would have left with more than just her wedding rings…much more.

Shawn’s sister denied the claims after receiving threatening calls from her sister. Saying she never received any gifts from Larry beyond the occasional Christmas or birthday present, she later told the tabloids, “I’m tired for taking the rap for things.  I did not have an affair with Larry.  He’s been like a father to me.”

King’s lawyer, Dennis Wasser, says “There’s a 50-50 chance this divorce is not happening.  His focus is on the best interest of his children.  It’s not clear to me which way he’s going to turn on this issue.”  The couple, a few decades apart in age, have two boys.  They were also spotted publicly embracing only one day after they both filed for divorce.  Looks like Shawn may just keep those wedding and engagement rings on, after all.  Maybe Larry will consider getting them upgraded with better diamonds, though.
