Two Americans hikers held captive in Iran for several months have recently gotten engaged. Both of their mothers, who have pleaded the Iranian government for their safe return, visited them for the first time this week and could confirm the announcement. Both Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd were detained in Iran, along with Josh Fattal, after allegedly crossing the Iranian border by accident. The three Americans were on an expedition hiking through Iraqi Kurdistan. While Bauer and Fattal share a prison cell, Shourd is being held alone, though she sees the other two twice a day for thirty minutes.

Bauer apparently fashioned engagement rings from the threads of his shirt. He proposed to Shourd during one of their daily thirty-minute visits. “Sarah couldn’t wait to show me her ring. It’s one of the things that keeps her going–knowing that she and Shane have this unbreakable bond and a friend in Josh who will always be there for them.” Sarah’s mother said.

American Hikers in Iran

Bauer’s mother, Cindy Hickey, announced the engagement in a joint statement from each of the mothers.  “Shane told me he proposed to Sarah in the yard of Evin Prison on January 6th, the very same day that we applied for our visas to go visit them.  We’re all so overjoyed at the news but its obviously impossible to know when a wedding will take place.  We just hope and pray that Iran will do the right thing and release them so they can get on with their lives.”

Holly Hunter appeared on the Late Late Show this week wearing a conspicuously large diamond on her ring finger and host Craig Ferguson wasn’t about to let it go. Desperately hoping for an engagement announcement, he pressed Hunter about the ring on her finger.

Holly Hunter

“Do you have some news?” Ferguson asked. Hunter looked down at the ring and coyly sighed, “Well, you know…”
“It’s a bold statement right there.”
“I know, isn’t it, though?” Hunter added. “It’s very bold, from a very confident man.”
“He used to have money at one point, clearly. Probably not so much anymore!”

52 year-old Hunter, an Oscar winner and star of the TNT drama, Saving Grace, was married to Polish cinematographer Janusz Kaminski from 1995-2001. Since then, she has been dating actor Gordon MacDonald. Hunter surprisingly gave birth to twins in 2005 at the age of 47. She obviously tends to keep her romantic life private and not divulge too many details about her personal life, either. So we may not know if there are wedding rings in the plans anytime soon–most likely after the wedding has taken place!

A new biography reveals some shocking details about the relationship between Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren.   Like the golf star wasn’t even liked by his future wife.  Woods had to ask Nordegren out five times before she finally accepted.   Even after this extended pre-copurtship, Elin wasn’t even sure she liked Woods.   Steve Helling, a staff writer at People Magazine, wrote Tiger: The Real Story and reveals “Elin was not the type of young woman to date Tiger Woods, at least not at first.  For one thing, she had a boyfriend at home in Sweden.  He was a normal, decent guy, driving a forklift in a warehouse.  If things worked out with him, her life would be safe and predictable, an option that Elin found extremely appealing.”
The book reveals the courtship period of the Elin-Tiger relationship, their marriage and the eventual scandal.  Dating Tiger Woods, the book says, would be the opposite of her quaint and stable relationship with the forklift operator:  “Paparazzi and tabloids would be around every corner, and Elin couldn’t bear the thought of such an invasion of privacy.  Besides, she really didn’t find Tiger attractive; he simply wasn’t her type.”

Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren Another revealing detail is that the golf legend got a friend to ask Nordegren out for him while working for pro golfer Jesper Parnevik.  According to a source, “She thought it was so weird and pathetic.  Of course she said no.”

Tiger grew more persistent each time Elin turned him down.  The pro golfer was not one to be turned down and eventually Elin agreed to one casual date with him, reportedly to get him off her back.  Elin came to like Tiger and began to feel that he was not a celebrity.  She was surprised to be falling for him so quickly.

Another intriguing detail is how the couple got engaged.  Elin and Tiger got engaged while on safari in South Africa.  Apparently the pair wandered off and freaked out the ranger, who didn’t know where they had gone off to.  When they returned, Elin was sporting a massive engagement ring.  “The diamond was half as big as my finger.”  The ranger said.

Miranda Lambert can’t help but be giddy for her upcoming marriage to country crooner Blake Shelton.  Her “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” reputation couldn’t be further from the truth!  “As bad-ass as her image is, she is 200-percent girl.”  Shelton says.  Shelton only just recently reported proposing to Lambert.  Apparently, while window-shopping for designer engagement rings earlier in the year, Lambert had her sights set on a half-million dollar pink diamond ring.  At the time, Lambert noted how he’d have to save up for a while for the costly ring, but Lambert has since accepted a a different diamond and platinum ring.    Shelton was quite traditional about the engagement process, even calling Lambert’s dad to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage.   “That was so Southern and old-school and perfect.”  Lambert said.  And about the ring?  “He knew exactly what I wanted, so it’s so much more perfect than I could have picked out myself.”  And cheaper too!

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert

The two were spotted at a No. 1 Party in Nashville, their first public appearance since getting engaged last Sunday.  And of course Lambert was wearing the diamond and platinum ring while clutching her pet Chihuahua, Cher.  “Being engaged ups the excitement level for us another notch.”  Shelton said.  He also added that, after five years, “everybody around us probably saw it coming.”

Truly awesome diamonds have graced the ring fingers of royalty, actresses, and pop stars over the years. Ever since Maximillian I of Austria gave one of the first diamond engagement rings on record to Mary of Burgundy in 1477, these rings have stood for a loving commitment and an opulent reminder of the love a couple can share. Ever since those first incarnations, diamond engagement rings have become larger, more elaborate, and have come to include a whole score of different jewels and metals.

Elizabeth Taylor diamonds Elizabeth Taylor. When talking about this celebrity, we can’t simply choose one ring to mention. Taylor’s had several husbands, and a score of beautiful rings. She received a 30 carat emerald-cut diamond from Michael Todd, Taylor’s third husband. She also received a 39-carat Krupp diamond, a heart-shaped 17th-century Taj Mahal diamond, and the pear-shaped diamond of 69.42 carats given to her by Richard Burton.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip Queen Elizabeth II. We can’t forget this royal, who received a majestic engagement ring from Prince Phillip, crafted from the diamonds of his mother’s tiara. The ring features a classic 3-carat diamond set in platinum with five smaller stones.
Princess DI engagement ring Princess Diana. This royal icon received a lavish engagement ring from Prince Charles of 18-carat blue oval sapphire, surrounded by fourteen diamonds. Prince Charles originally proposed to Diana without an engagement ring. He asked her to consider the media scrutiny and royal pressures before accepting. Diana soon accepted and was presented with an assortment of engagement ring options from Garrard Jewelers, the official royal jeweler since 1843.
Madonna and Guy Ritchie Madonna. This pop icon received a three-stone antique Edwardian engagement ring from former husband Guy Ritchie. The ring featured five-carat’s worth of round diamonds. The Neil Lane-crafted ring featured a decorative platinum band with the three stones meant to represent mother, father and their son.
Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis Paris Hilton. Though she never married the Greek shipping heir, billionaire Paris Latsis, she certainly did get a whopping engagement package from him. The celebutante received two diamond engagement rings: a $5 million 24-carat canary diamond ring and a $2.1 million 15-carat white-diamond ring. When the engagement plans fell through, Hilton auctioned off the nearly $5 million ring to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. The ring sold for half its original price.

Most celebs find the most romantic way possible to propose. Finding the right engagement ring and location are two crucial aspects to their success.  And in many cases, many celebs can’t help but choose lavish and imaginative engagement proposals.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Cruise wasted no time with his whirlwind romance with Katie Holmes. He popped the question while the two were dining at the Jules Verne Restaurant at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The pair had an elaborately staged candlelit wedding in Italy in 2006. It is not exactly known when Cruise proposed–some say early in the morning, some say over a candlelit dinner. What is known is that Cruise proposed to Holmes with a beautiful solitaire engagement ring.
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling. Dean surprised Spelling by proposing to her on a Christmas tree farm in Toronto on Christmas Eve. The night included a horse-drawn carriage ride, where the couple followed a set of lights laid down for over half a mile. The pair finally arrived at an enclosure surrounded by decorated Christmas trees, where Dean got down on one knee and proposed.
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. Okay, this is one proposal exclusive to celebrities. In front of 7,000 fans at a “Legends of Bronze” event honoring several country legends. When his statue was unveiled, Brooks pointed out a curious feature: a wedding band that he requested the sculptor to include. Brooks then got down on one knee and proposed to girlfriend Trisha Yearwood. After the proposal, Yearwood commented: “All I can say is that I am so happy. What I am feeling right now I would wish on anyone.”
Katy Perry and Russell Brand Russell Brand and Katy Perry. Brand and Perry went half way across the world to get engaged. Brand proposed to Perry in a tent at the foot of a mountain in India. This special engagement was on New Year’s Eve.
Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson. Okay, so we all know how that ended…once their reality show stopped, they stopped. But before all that, Lachey proposed to Simpson during a private getaway on the Hawaiian coast. The proposal was, of course, televised for the couple’s reality show, “Newlyweds”.
Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon. The couple were enjoying a very intimate vacation at the bed and breakfast, Planter’s Inn, in Charleston, South Carolina. This proposal was ultra-casual, yet quite romantic. Phillipe decided to make Witherspoon breakfast-in-bed. While serving her waffles with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, he presented her with an engagement ring and she said “yes”.
Jimmy Fallon and Nancy Juvonen Jimmy Fallon and Nancy Juvonen. Fallon proposed to girlfriend Juvonen at her family’s home at Lake Winnipisaukee, where the Katherine Hepburn film “On Golden Pond” was filmed. To add to the beautiful scenery, Fallon commissioned a one-0f-a-kind Neil Lane diamond engagement ring that would have had made any woman envious.
Vince Vaughn and Kyla Weber Vince Vaughn and Kyla Weber. Proposing to his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, actor Vince Vaughn chose a date that he would not forget. He admitted on the Ellen show, “Valentine’s Day rolled around and I figured this is not a ship to be missed, because I will never forget this date.” Vaughn proposed to his 29 year-old real estate agent girlfriend with a gorgeous $125,000 4-carat diamond set in platinum.
Seal and Heidi Klum Seal and Heidi Klum. Few celebrity proposals can match the level of imagination and romance of Seal’s proposal to “Project Runway” host Heidi Klum. Seal chose a romantic mountaintop locale for his proposal–14,000 feet up in Whistler, B.C. Escorting Klum to an uncharted territory, Seal led Klum to a custom-built igloo atop a glacier, where he proposed to her with a ring and champagne. And with only two days before Christmas, it was the perfect time to make an announcement to all their family and friends!
Pink and Carey Hart Pink and Carey Hart. Not one to go by tradition, Pink took matters into her own hands and proposed herself to boyfriend Motocross racer, Carey Hart. Settled in the stands, Pink held up a sign that read “Will You Marry Me?” while Hart was in the middle of a race. When Hart didn’t stop, she flipped the sign to the other side, which read “I’m serious.” Hart immediately quit the race and ran over to accept the proposal.

Of course, news of it is spreading everywhere now. The ‘it’ in question is the engagement ring worn by Bella (played by Kristen Stewart) in the new Twilight movie. And now that everyone is talking about it, including that special group of Twilight fanatics known as “Twi-Hards”, Twilight ring copies are being featured and sold in a specialty collaboration between author Stephanie Meyer and the Infinite Jewelry Company, appealing to those who want exactly the same ring that Bella has in the book.

Kristin Stewart and Robert Pattinson

In the book, author Stephanie Meyer describes the ring as follows: “The face was a long oval, set with glittering round stones. The band was gold–delicate and narrow. The gold made a fragile web around the diamonds.” True devotees of the movie are also waiting for Kristen Stewart to flash a real-life engagement ring after the two have publicly admitted they’re in the middle of a romance. But just as the couple kept the beginning stages of their romance under wraps, it is just a likely that Pattinson and Stewart would keep any engagement news from the public until they were good and ready.

And for those of you interested in finding a classic diamond-studded engagement ring that is similar to Bella’s from the Twilight series, then check out the options from Tacori, one of the world’s most prestigious diamond ring jewelers.

Never one for less, multimillionaire American Idol and X-Factor judge, Simon Cowell, is planning to marry his bride four times this year. Does that fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy will have four different wedding gowns?  Or better yet-four different wedding rings? With different styles–like pave settings and solitaire engagement rings? Probably not! The 50 year-old X-Factor judge just seems to have buckled under pressure from international pals to hold four different weddings in different locations. It’s a far cry from the intimate small affair that Cowell talked about only a month ago.

Simon Cowell and Mezhgan Hussainy

Word in the blogosphere is that Cowell will marry in Brighton, England, Los Angeles, Barbados, and Hollywood. Another (strange) rumor is that the weddings will feature a Salvador Dali theme.

Cowell’s brother told Real Radio this week, “My mum is in Los Angeles this week sorting out the lovebirds and coming back, hopefully, with a wedding date. Mum’s final words to me before she flew off to LA were, ‘Last year he said he was never, never, never going to get married and this year he’s getting married four times.”

Cowell may be many things, but he’s definitely not cheap with dollars and carats. Hussainy was seen just last month wearing a brilliant cut engagement ring estimated to be worth $750,000 and approximately six carats. “You can see that the clarity and color is nothing less than perfect!” We’ll be sure to see what Cowell show us for wedding rings.
