Famous Ladies…and their Engagement Rings

Truly awesome diamonds have graced the ring fingers of royalty, actresses, and pop stars over the years. Ever since Maximillian I of Austria gave one of the first diamond engagement rings on record to Mary of Burgundy in 1477, these rings have stood for a loving commitment and an opulent reminder of the love a couple can share. Ever since those first incarnations, diamond engagement rings have become larger, more elaborate, and have come to include a whole score of different jewels and metals.

Elizabeth Taylor diamonds Elizabeth Taylor. When talking about this celebrity, we can’t simply choose one ring to mention. Taylor’s had several husbands, and a score of beautiful rings. She received a 30 carat emerald-cut diamond from Michael Todd, Taylor’s third husband. She also received a 39-carat Krupp diamond, a heart-shaped 17th-century Taj Mahal diamond, and the pear-shaped diamond of 69.42 carats given to her by Richard Burton.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip Queen Elizabeth II. We can’t forget this royal, who received a majestic engagement ring from Prince Phillip, crafted from the diamonds of his mother’s tiara. The ring features a classic 3-carat diamond set in platinum with five smaller stones.
Princess DI engagement ring Princess Diana. This royal icon received a lavish engagement ring from Prince Charles of 18-carat blue oval sapphire, surrounded by fourteen diamonds. Prince Charles originally proposed to Diana without an engagement ring. He asked her to consider the media scrutiny and royal pressures before accepting. Diana soon accepted and was presented with an assortment of engagement ring options from Garrard Jewelers, the official royal jeweler since 1843.
Madonna and Guy Ritchie Madonna. This pop icon received a three-stone antique Edwardian engagement ring from former husband Guy Ritchie. The ring featured five-carat’s worth of round diamonds. The Neil Lane-crafted ring featured a decorative platinum band with the three stones meant to represent mother, father and their son.
Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis Paris Hilton. Though she never married the Greek shipping heir, billionaire Paris Latsis, she certainly did get a whopping engagement package from him. The celebutante received two diamond engagement rings: a $5 million 24-carat canary diamond ring and a $2.1 million 15-carat white-diamond ring. When the engagement plans fell through, Hilton auctioned off the nearly $5 million ring to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. The ring sold for half its original price.

Donald Trump and Melania Knauss Donald Trump presented his bride with a huge 12-carat emerald-cut engagement ring that cost $1 million.
Paris Hilton Paris Hilton was briefly engaged and reportedly wore a 24-carat emerald cut diamond ring.
Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio eloped, as some may recall. He presented her with a platinum eternity band set with thirty-six small baguette diamonds.
Jessica Simspon and Tony Romo Jessica Simpson was briefly engaged and wore a 4-carat engagement ring that featured an unusual pear-shaped diamond with two side stones.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Tom Cruise presented Katie Holmes with a 5-carat ring with a classic oval-shaped diamond in a pave setting.
Madonna and Guy Ritchie Madonna’s ring from Guy Richie was reportedly a 5-carat total weight ring with a three-stone design in a bezel setting.

Jewelry Trends of the Stars

Over the past year, celebrities have been sporting some unusual and exotic jewelry choices. Superstars such as Madonna and Angelina Jolie, known for their sense of fashion, were spotted wearing snake necklaces and snake rings, as well as the always fashionable diamond-studded crucifix, which has been worn since the eighties. Diamond necklaces also seem to be all the rage, worn in variations by other superstars such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Pink.

Chandelier earrings and diamond tennis bracelets have been spotted on Carrie Underwood, Sarah Jessica Parker, America Ferrara and Kate Winslet. Sometimes less is more and these items reveal a simple, elegant and flexible style.

On the red carpet recently, we’ve seen a bevy of items, including Tiffany-style necklaces, chunky designer-style cable bracelets, and celebrity-quality engagement rings.

There’s also been a celebrity baby boom over the past two years, with Angelina Jolie, J-Lo, Halle Berry, Nicole Richie, Christina Aguilera and Jessica Alba all sporting maternal jewelry, which is perhaps more understated but nevertheless quite elegant. All these stars have spotted during pregnancy with simple clover necklaces or diamond stud earrings, which have a timeless appeal.

No Engagement Plans for Madonna

Everyone was talking about it.  But that’s what the Queen of Pop likes. When has she ever turned down free publicity?  “Causing a commotion” is exactly the way she makes headlines.  And this week it’s no exception.  Because she dropped Baby Jesus aka Jesus Luz, her Brazilian lover in his early twenties, nearly half her age.

There was speculation in previous weeks that an engagement plan was in the works.  Madonna, who is 50, reportedly wanted another child.  The irony of Madonna and Jesus Luz having a child would have been tabloid fodder for weeks.

But now there is news that Jesus Luz has left the Queen of Pop, packing his bags, without leaving her with so much as an engagement ring.  Not that she needed anymore jewelry.  And not that he got off bad either.  Luz has reportedly been working high-profile modeling and DJ gigs for months because of his connection to the Queen of Pop.   Since Madonna picked him up as a model for a high-profile, provocative and post-divorce photo shoot for V Magazine last year, Luz has had the opportunity to work the catwalks of Milan, New York and Paris.  Not bad for someone who just a few years ago was working as a shirtless vendor on the streets of Rio.  The split is reportedly amicable.  The singer, furthermore, has sworn off any future plans to marry after her protracted divorce with British filmmaker Guy Ritchie just last year.
